David created this painting based on the famous trail that passes from the Denver area to the south at Durango, Colorado. It had not yet been conceived or created until the 1970's, but the title sounds so compelling that there must have been settlers, cowboys and Native Americans traveling along the route somewhere a hundred years or more before. Here is one of those, an old grizzly cowboy, pilgrim, trapper or explorer, begun as a conceived sketch and developed into this painting.
